| Centraal Beheer Achmea Midwinter Marathon | Netherlands | Apeldoorn | Marathon | February | "Marathonspecialist Luc Krotwaar verschijnt op zondag 21 februari aan de start van de Centraal Beheer Achmea Marathon in Apeldoorn. Krotwaar, bijgenaamd de witte Keniaan, is een Nederlandse langeafstandsloper die is gespecialiseerd in de marathon. Zijn beste prestaties zijn een vijftiende plaats op de marathon tijdens het wereldkampioenschap in Helsinki en een vierde plaats op de marathon bij het EK 2006 in Gothenburg. Hier behaalde hij met het Nederlands marathonteam een bronzen medaille. Zijn echte doorbraak bij de senioren maakte Luc Krotwaar in 1994. Hij begon het jaar met het winnen van de 3000 meter bij de Nederlandse indoorkampioenschappen en een zilveren medaille bij het NK veldlopen in Wieringerwerf. In 1997/1998 begon hij zich toe te leggen op de halve marathon en de marathon. Krotwaar was hierbij vrijwel gelijk succesvol, getuige zijn nationale titels op het NK halve marathon (1998) en NK marathon in 1997 en 1998. In totaal werd hij zevenmaal Nederlands kampioen op de marathon en tweemaal op de halve marathon. Inmiddels heeft Krotwaar besloten om na 2010 met topsport te stoppen voor wat betreft de marathon. Hij gaat dan proberen grenzen te verleggen bij het ultralopen, met name de afstanden van de marathon tot aan de 100 kilometer" | ||

Start at the Marketplace in the shadow of the Basilica dating from the 13th century. After Enschede, Amsterdam has the oldest marathon in the Netherlands.The initiative to organise the Amsterdam Marathon was taken in 1974 by AV’23. The club quickly realised that it needed the help from other clubs to organise an event of this size. AV’23 found this support in Blauw Wit, Sagitta, ADA, ATOS and Startbaan. The first ING Amsterdam Marathon as we know it today was held on 3 May 1975. Start and finish were at the Olympic Stadium. The first marathon was won by Joergen Jensen from Denmark who ran the distance in 2.16.51. A year later Karel Lismont, European champion (Helsinki, 1971) and second a the Munich Olympic Games (1972) came to Amsterdam. The small, indomitable athlete, still regarded in Belgium as the best marathon runner ever born on its soil, won in extremely hot weather conditions.
