| Cornwall Athletic Club Duchy Marathon | United Kingdom | | Cornwall | Marathon | March | "When the inaugural ‘Duchy’ was held in 1977 there were just thirteen UK Marathons in the Road Runners’ Club Handbook and the Duchy Marathon was ranked equal toughest, alongside the Isle of Wight race. Five years later, when ‘Marathon Mania’, sparked by the first London Marathon, was at its height the number had grown to almost one hundred and fifty, including the Isles of Scilly (four laps of St Mary’s) and the Snowdonia, not surprisingly billed as the hilliest and hardest of all. The Duchy quickly came to be a favourite with athletes from all over the country. The course, from Land’s End to Redruth, with its notorious hills at Connor Downs (18 miles) and Roseworthy (21 miles) became a ‘classic’ and attracted many of the top marathon and ultra distance men." |

| Crawley Track Marathon | United Kingdom | | Crawley | Marathon | April | "Had a great weekend in Gloucester, where we ran the Boddington Marathon on the 19th of June. Unusually I ran the first couple of laps with Gil (we were running 12 laps in total) then met Collette O’ Hagan from Dublin. We jog/walked together and crossed the line in 5-26-53, my best Marathon time since Hastings in December 2008. I was well pleased with that! Still need to ‘up’ the training though. Would b e nice to get closer to 5 hours again. Maybe next year, who knows." |

| Brighton Marathon | United Kingdom | | Brighton | Marathon | April | "With the 2011 Brighton Marathon still many months away (Race Day is Sunday10th April) if you started training for the race now, whether entered ornot, you will probably be ""stale"" and under-motivated by the time the raceroles around. What we suggest, whatever your fitness level, is that you spend the summerdoing some very light jogging, building up to a level of ability that meansyou are then fit enough, six months before the race (by late September) totake on a graduated training programme that will have you in good enoughshape by early April next year, to take on the Brighton Marathon." |
| Bungay Black Dog Marathon | United Kingdom | | Bungay | Marathon | April | "A new course record was set at this year's Bungay Black Dog Marathon as hundreds of runners made their way around the gruelling route in the sunshine. Steve Prosser, of Bishop's Stortford Running Club, was first home in the marathon in 2:44:43 to beat Carl Prewer's 2007 record of 2:46:59. He was delighted with his performance and said: ""It was a fantastic course, but I found the last mile really hard."" Second over the line was Neil Aitken, of Clapham Chasers, in 2:48:17. Mark Shepherd, of Team Kennet, secured third place in 2:51:58 and Christopher Tilbrook, of St Albans Striders, came fourth in 2:52:19.The first woman home was Maggie Fenn, of Vale Royal, in 3:07:57. She said: ""It was absolutely brilliant. It was very hot, but there was a bit of a breeze when I needed it. This is a personal best for me. The marshals and all the volunteers have been just brilliant.""The first Black Dog runner home in the Marathon was Ian Taylor (running 4 marathons in 4 consecutive weeks) who came 70th in 3:42:11. Laura Devereux was the first female Black Dog to finish in 3:54:03 (100th). Bobbie Sauerzapf was 114th in an annoying 4:00:19 and Colin Whale managed a time of 5:20:14 (209th)." |

| Virgin London Marathon | United Kingdom | | London | Marathon | April | "The London Marathon course is flat and fast. It starts in Blackheath, heads east through Charlton and Woolwich for three miles, turns west and passes the Cutty Sark in Greenwich after six to seven miles. It crosses the River Thames at Tower Bridge and then loops around the east end of London, past Canary Wharf in Docklands, before heading west again along the Highway and the Embankment to Parliament Square, Birdcage Walk and the final corner in front of Buckingham Palace. The first London Marathon, held on 29 March 1981, finished on Constitution Hill between Green Park and Buckingham Palace. From 1982 until 1993 the race finished on Westminster Bridge with the Houses of Parliament in the background. But in 1994 repair work to the bridge meant the finish line was moved to The Mall where it has been ever since." |

| Three Forts Marathon | United Kingdom | | West Sussex | Marathon | May | "1970 was a boom time for marathon running. The New York Marathon had started with circuits of Central Park and in 1976 it first took to the city‘s streets. Former Olympic champion, Chris Brasher, had yet to have his idea to hold a marathon in London. The London Marathon eventually started in 1981. 1977 saw the start of The Three Forts Marathon. It had been devised by Southdown Orienteers as a 26 mile cross-country. The course followed a figure of eight loop starting and finishing at Portslade. It took in the Iron-age hill forts of Chanctonbury Ring, Cissbury Ring and Devil‘s Dyke. The event was a success and subsequently the Southdown 10 race was held on the same day. The events were always in the heat of mid-June. Although successful, by 1986 the numbers entering began to match the number of marshals required to guide the runners. The event then stopped." |
| Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon | United Kingdom | | Belfast | Marathon | May | "Running all over the world is a great experience - I have run in New York, Paris, Prague, Budapest and many other places, but there is nothing quite like running in your home City. Our marathon is heading for its 30th anniversary and each year it goes from strength to strength. 2010 saw over 18,500 runners & walkers take to the Streets, the majority fundraising for that cause or charity that means something to them. It is a community event without parallel in Northern Ireland and I encourage everyone to sign up for 2011 - if you can walk, run or even 'wheel' then you can join the team - May Day 2011 .... lets make it an anniversary to remember!'" |

All sessions are fully supported by excellent coaches who are always on hand to offer advice and friendly support. In fact, friendliness is very much a theme for the Spartans who try to support a wide range of members with a variety of abilities. | New Forest Marathon | United Kingdom | | New Forest | Marathon | September | "UK Athletics certification rules do not permit the New Forest Marathon to be called a 'Road Race' as 3 miles (5 km) of the new course are 'Off Road' though these are on good forest track. The rules state that a maximum of 2.6 km are permitted to be off road and if this is exceeded the race has to be classed as 'Multi-Terrain'. Our new course has been reliably measured by a UK Athletics / RRC accredited measurer and is an accurate 26.2 / 13.1 miles. The Half Marathon is 100% on road and still a road race. When the New Forest Marathon and Half Marathon were first conceived in 1981 few motorists used the race route on a Sunday morning. Society has changed since then and now everyone is busy visiting supermarkets, garden centres and DIY stores, main forest roads are now full of traffic from 09:00 am.
