| Stockholm Marathon Sweden Stockholm Marathon June info@marathon.se http://www.StockholmMarathon.se "Friday April 16, 1896, short before 2pm, the marathon race was to bring an end to the first Olympics. 17 of the 25 athletes who had traveled to Marathon started the race. One each from Australia, USA, France and Hungary as well as 13 Greeks. Spiridon Louis, a Greek water-carrier entered the Panathinaiko Stadium first of them all and won the race of 40 kilometers in slightly less than 3 hours. Crown Prince Constantine and Prince George rushed to meet him and accompanied him on his final lap for a finishing time of 2:58.50. A commemorative medal with a special ribbon and 8-page historical pamphlet is available, introduced by AIMS, the Association of International Marathons. All items are housed in a specially designed, gilded display box (see picture below) that is for sale at the Stockholm marathon expo at the price of 100 SEK." |
