| Augrabies Extreme Marathon South Africa Augrabies Marathon October nadia@extrememarathons.com or estienne@extrememarathons.com http://www.extrememarathons.com "Estienne Arndt was born in Durban 1953 and matriculated at Durban High School in 1970. He started Road Running in 1979 when he ran his first Comrades Marathon. Since then he has been actively involved in running, event administration and fundraising for charities through road running. In November 1988, Estienne was involved in a motorcycle accident, which resulted in his right foot being amputated. In 1996, after eight determined years, he eventually qualified to run the Comrades Marathon and completed the event wearing a prosthesis, being the first and only person to achieve this, and has since completed it three more times. With a complete new set of goals to be achieved, Estienne has not stopped, and has gone on to seek further adventures. The seed for the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon was planted when he, together with the blind solo yachtsman, Geoff Hilton-Barber and his wife Carol, entered and ran the seven day Marathon Des Sables in the Moroccan Sahara desert. Running with a field of six hundred runners, Estienne had a vision of organising a similar event through the Great Kalahari in South Africa." |
