From the inception in 1974 through 1977 it was a men’s only event. Starting in 1978 in Oak Ridge it was open to females and Mary Lindahl was the first female winner. During the time it was held in Oak Ridge, the record time was 2:19:21 by Kerry Ragg from New Zealand in 1979 and the female record time was set in 1981 by Susan Shipley at a time of 2:56:21. Both records held through the life of the marathon." |
